The moments that mattered

Not everything from the day needed to go into the story.

There were sandy shoes.

There was a towel that blew away.

There was a short argument about who carried what.

That isn’t what we chose to keep.

We chose the moments that showed something about him.

The moment he stepped forward instead of back.

The moment he made a decision without being told.

The moment he rebuilt instead of giving up.

The moment he handled something carefully.

Those are the moments that shape how a child sees himself.

A story doesn’t have to include every detail to be true.

It needs to include the details that matter.

When you look back through your own photos, you will see them.

The small signs of strength.

The small signs of independence.

The small signs of judgement.

Those are the parts worth repeating.

Because when those moments are told again and again, they become more than memories.

They become part of how a child understands who he is.
